Experience & Leadership
Early Life and Education
Nongelo’s leadership skills were recognized early on in his life when he was feted with the John Foster Spade of Honor Demonstration of Great Presence, Determination, Humility, and Dedication alongside the citation of Honor by the City of Ekurhuleni in 2005, at the age of 17. He has also served in various leadership positions in student organizations, as well as on the Benon Community Policing Forum executive board.
Growing up in a family of practitioners in the arts and entertainment industry, Nongelo was exposed to the world of creative arts from an early age. He completed his National Certificate in Marketing from Ekurhuleni East College and a Public Relations Corporate Diploma from Boston Business College. As an advocate for youth empowerment, Nongelo holds leadership training and governance certification from the Walter Sisulu Academy.
Governance and board experience
Nongelo has extensive experience serving on various governance and board positions. In 2020, he was appointed by former Minister Nathi Mthethwa to serve on the Covid Relief Panel for the Creative Industry. In 2022, former MEC Mbali Hope appointed him to serve on the Gauteng Arts Culture Council, where his role is to advise the department and MEC on creative arts matters in the province and oversee the distribution of funding to artists and arts organizations.
In addition to these positions, Nongelo has also been appointed to the National Film and Video Foundation PESP Grants Committee and the SAMA Awards Steering Committee. He is a board member and spokesperson for the Moshito Music Conference and serves as the ANC Ekurhuleni Creative Industry (Regional Elections Team) Representative.
Nongelo’s expertise and skills in the arts and culture industry have made him a valuable member of these boards and councils. He is committed to advancing the interests of artists and creatives and promoting the growth and development of the industry. Through his work on these governance and board positions, he has been able to make a significant contribution to the creative sector in South Africa.
Creative Industry Experience
Nongelo has an extensive background in the creative industry, having held numerous positions on various committees and boards throughout his career. He has been an active member of the Sama Awards Steering Committee, the ANC Ekurhuleni Creative Industry RET Rep, and the Moshito Music Conference & Exhibition Board. Nongelo has also served as the Secretary General of the Ekurhuleni Creative Council, played a key role in the SABC Summer Song Task Team, and serves as the Managing Director of Karabo Ya Africa Media.
In addition to these roles, Nongelo has significantly contributed to the promotion of local content in South Africa, serving as a member of the SABC 90% Local Content Task Team. He has also been an active participant in the South African Arts & Culture Youth Forum, where she currently serves as Secretary.Â
Nongelo’s passion for youth development is evident in his work as a former Executive Member of the Ekurhuleni Digital Hub and as a member of the Ekurhuleni Youth Council. Furthermore, he is the spokesperson for the Hope of Africa Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to uplift underprivileged communities across the country.
